According to French media reports, three seniors died in or near polling stations during the local elections in France. In Saint-Étienne, eastern France, a more than 80-year-old assessor who was himself on one of the electoral lists suffered a heart attack, the newspaper “Le Parisien” reported, citing the town’s mayor. In Annecy, a man also died of heart failure at the polling station, media reported. According to local broadcaster France 3, the voter was 81 years old.
In Carcassonne, southern France, an 82-year-old woman reportedly collapsed at a polling station. Despite attempts to resuscitate her, the elderly woman died in the ambulance after heart failure, the newspaper “Le Monde” wrote.
Local representatives are now elected in more than 1,500 French municipalities, including numerous large cities. In the remaining more than 33,000 mostly smaller communities, a winner was already determined after the first round of voting last Sunday. (sda/dpa)
