After days of rain in Hawaii, which led to flooding in many places, authorities on the island of Oahu have ordered evacuations. The water level at the Wahiawa Dam has reached a critical value, the emergency center said. If the dam breaks, there is a risk of life-threatening flooding. In the region in the north of the island, more than 4,000 residents were affected, a spokeswoman told the US broadcaster CNN. Oahu’s North Shore is known as a surfer’s paradise.

The governor of the Pacific island group of Hawaii, Josh Green, called on the population to follow evacuation instructions. The heavy rain led to such severe flooding that the floodwaters reached up to people’s chests in places, Green said in a video message. The National Guard and Coast Guard would be available to assist.
