Around a year after the parliamentary elections, the social democratic party Siumut is leaving the Greenlandic government. In doing so, the party is sending the wrong signal to the USA, explained Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Facebook. Against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to annex Greenland, Nielsen formed a broad four-party coalition last year.
“Our country is exposed to pressure and attention from the outside world like we have never experienced before,” emphasized the head of government on Friday. That’s why it’s important to demonstrate solidarity. “It annoys me that Siumut no longer wants to be part of this community.”
Minister: Backsliding in negotiations with the USA
The Social Democratic Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Motzfeld, opposed her party’s decision. She has so far been involved in the current negotiations between Denmark, Greenland and the USA to find a solution to the conflict over the Arctic island. “That means you have to start all over again,” she told Danish radio.
According to the Danish news agency Ritzau, the background to the decision by Siumut boss Aleqa Hammond is a dispute over the fact that two ministers in the Greenland government want to run for the Danish parliament in the upcoming elections in Denmark. (sda/dpa)
