According to media reports, the Kremlin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev met with representatives of US President Donald Trump in Florida. The Russian state news agency Tass reported this, citing negotiating circles.
Dmitriyev is Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin’s special representative for economic cooperation with foreign countries and also plays an important role in the negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. From Moscow’s perspective, it should primarily influence Washington’s position and also improve economic relations. According to media reports, Dmitriyev has developed a good relationship with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff in recent months, whom he also took out to dinner during negotiations in Moscow.
The USA sees itself as a mediator in the talks between Russia and Ukraine. There have been several meetings recently in the Middle East, which is now shaken by the Iran war, and once in Switzerland. Dmitriyev has repeatedly praised the United States for its role as a mediator in the Ukraine negotiations, while he railed against Europe, which he said would soon have to beg Russia for oil, gas and fertilizer supplies.
