According to police, at least 23 people have died in Kenya’s capital Nairobi due to heavy rain and flooding. Some residents drowned and others were killed due to damaged power cables. Rescue workers and the military were deployed on Saturday to search for missing people and help people trapped in houses and cars.
According to police, dozens of cars were washed away. The power grid is interrupted in some parts of the capital. Streets, shops and other infrastructure were also damaged. Numerous flights had to be canceled at Nairobi International Airport.
The government promises quick help
President William Ruto described the floods and numerous deaths as tragic. The government will act quickly to protect lives, said Ruto. The president ordered the release of aid from national reserves.
The Kenya Meteorological Service warned of further heavy rain in the coming days in Nairobi and other areas in the south and east of the East African country. (sda/dpa)
