At least 19 people were killed in the accident, the police said. 25 people survived the fall and were treated for injuries.
A 24-year-old Briton was among the fatalities, but it was initially unclear whether there were more foreigners among them. According to information, only nine of the victims had initially been identified as of Monday afternoon (local time). Of the 44 people on the bus, in addition to Nepalese, there were also tourists from China, Great Britain and New Zealand.
The bus was traveling from the city of Pokhara in the central part of the country, which is visited by many tourists, to Kathmandu when it left the road around 80 kilometers west of Kathmandu for reasons that are still unclear.
Pictures on Nepalese television showed him lying shattered on the banks of the Trishuli River. Road accidents in the mountainous regions of Nepal are common. This is due, among other things, to bad roads, difficult terrain and driving too fast. (hkl/sda/dpa)
