“He is the only personality who can represent the strength and invincibility of our great state (…),” the state news agency KCNA quoted from the congress resolution. The “surge increase” in the country’s nuclear deterrent power under his leadership was also praised. It was not known whether there were abstentions or votes against in the vote.

The party congress, which opened on Thursday last week, is formally the highest political decision-making body in North Korea and traditionally takes place every five years. According to North Korea’s state media, around 5,000 party cadres took part in the meeting.
So far, state media has published little information about what future course for the country was decided at the party congress. Observers expect that Kim could give possible hints about expanding his nuclear weapons program. It is also important whether the party leader signals a willingness to engage in dialogue with US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. (sda/dpa)
