This was announced by the Istanbul public prosecutor’s office. The state news agency Anadolu reported that among those arrested was the frontman of the rock band Duman, Kaan Tangöze. It was also said that a well-known pop singer, an actor, a model and several businessmen were also included.
Investigators allege drug possession
The public prosecutor’s office is investigating various drug offenses, including the purchase, possession and consumption of prohibited substances. A total of around 53 grams of marijuana were also confiscated during raids. There was initially no statement from the accused.
Under Turkish law, drug offenses can be punished with up to five years in prison. In the case of first-time use, no proceedings are usually initiated or a suspended sentence is imposed.
Criticism of the authorities’ actions
Turkish authorities have carried out numerous raids against celebrities in recent weeks, including for suspected drug use.
Critics complain that some of the cases are publicly displayed and that the authorities take action against suspected consumers but not sufficiently against criminal networks. They also see political reasons behind the action and an attempt to denounce a certain lifestyle in the Islamic conservative government. (sda/dpa)
