The attacker then fled on foot. A short time later, a man nearby was arrested and taken to a police station. He is said to have already been known to the police for minor crimes.
The background to the attack was still unclear. But there are said to have been no connections between the victims, as police spokesman Simon Glasser emphasized. “It appears to have been a random attack,” he said. The authorities launched an investigation.
According to Sky News Australia, rescue workers treated a 22-year-old man with injuries to his neck and a 47-year-old woman with injuries to her stomach and chest. The media wrote that both were in mortal danger.
Eyewitnesses reported panic-like scenes. An employee at a nearby store said he first heard a scream and then people rushed to help. Shortly afterwards a helicopter and several ambulances arrived. (sda/dpa)
