The person was previously arrested in Rio Rico, around 100 kilometers south of Tucson in the state of Arizona. Authorities also searched a car and a house in the city. The whereabouts of Guthrie, who disappeared from her Tuscon home, remain unknown, the station quoted a law enforcement source as saying.
ABC News, citing an official, reported that the arrest was made with the assistance of the FBI. NBC News, citing a person familiar with the matter, reported that it was a man. However, no charges have been filed, according to CNN.
No trace since the end of January
There has been no trace of US television presenter Savannah Guthrie’s mother since the end of January. The investigators assume a kidnapping. In the past few days, after several blackmail letters, Guthrie and her two siblings had repeatedly addressed the largely unknown alleged kidnappers in video messages and most recently hinted at a possible ransom payment.
A deadline for paying six million US dollars (around 5.05 million euros), which had been requested in a letter, passed on Monday evening – the consequences are unclear. The FBI recently offered a reward of $50,000 for information that leads to the discovery of Guthrie or the arrest and conviction of those responsible. (dab/sda/dpa)
