A suspected drug gang is said to have hidden cocaine in cakes in a particularly sophisticated way and then smuggled it across borders. In this way, more than 30 kilograms of the drug came from Berlin to Prague.
This was announced by a spokeswoman for the Czech police’s anti-drug headquarters. “They decorated the cakes with whipped cream so that neither the contents nor the cut that they used to alter the filling could be seen,” she explained.
Smuggling by coach
It was said that the cakes filled with drugs were packed in cake boxes and brought individually by a courier on a coach from the German capital to the Czech capital. A brick containing around a kilogram of cocaine was hidden in each cake. The gang took advantage of the fact that the achievable black market price in the Czech Republic was significantly higher than in Germany.
The suspects include seven foreigners and one Czech. Five people are in custody. If convicted, they could face prison sentences of up to 18 years, the spokeswoman said. For legal reasons, the Czech police did not provide any information about the nationality of the foreign suspects.
Drugs offered on the Internet
The police accuse the gang of offering cocaine and other drugs such as crystal meth, ecstasy and LSD via an online chat service. She is said to have recruited young people in financial need as couriers. Large quantities of drugs, the equivalent of around 20,000 euros in cash, a car and several luxury watches were seized during raids. (sda/dpa)
