Slippery sidewalks and streets, freezing rain and poor visibility: The severe weather warnings have been lifted in northeastern Germany – but according to the German Weather Service (DWD), “marked slippery conditions” due to freezing rain are still possible

According to the DWD, black ice continues to occur in large parts of Berlin, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Due to lightning ice, no aircraft could take off or land at Berlin’s BER airport until midday on Friday.
BER remains closed
“Due to lightning ice and persistent freezing rain, take-offs and landings at BER are currently not possible,” said a spokeswoman for the airport this morning. The airport company’s winter service treated the flight operations areas with de-icing agent throughout the night, but to no avail; they were as slippery as glass. Due to lightning ice, take-offs and landings were not possible the evening before.
According to a spokeswoman, the first machines should be allowed to land and take off again on Friday. She left it open exactly when. Depending on the current weather conditions, de-icing takes up to an hour and is therefore more than twice as long as usual, it was said.
The effects were also felt at Frankfurt Airport: a plane bound for Berlin was diverted to Frankfurt, a spokeswoman said. Accordingly, six flights from Frankfurt to Berlin were canceled.
Restrictions, accidents and school closures in the northeast
The slippery conditions are also causing restrictions elsewhere: in Neubrandenburg, city bus traffic has been completely stopped for the time being. In Lower Saxony, school lessons are again canceled in the Diepholz district due to icy roads, and distance learning has been ordered in some cases.
In addition, a section of the A10 motorway on the northern Berlin ring in the direction of Hamburg was closed in the morning due to several slippery accidents. Two people were seriously injured, the police said. Drivers were asked to drive carefully.
An 82-year-old died in an accident. On Thursday she drove her car into oncoming traffic on Bundesstrasse 5 in Brandenburg and collided with a car. According to the police, slippery conditions could also have played a role here.
The slippery roads also led to accidents in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, for example on Autobahn 19: There were two crashes there in the morning. A car overturned in the Rostock district. Emergency services freed the trapped person from the vehicle, a police spokeswoman said. It was initially unclear how the accident happened and how seriously the person was injured.
A series of accidents had already occurred on the icy Autobahn 10 near Potsdam on Thursday. According to the police, 19 people were injured. Three of them were taken to a clinic. There were also disruptions in rail traffic between Hanover and Berlin.
Meteorologists expect the black ice situation to ease
Only a refrigerator, no more freezer compartment – this is the formula that the DWD uses for the forecast for the weekend. In the extreme north-east of Germany, people can expect a mix of sleet, rain and the last bit of freezing rain at the weekend “with slightly plus degrees”. (dab/sda/dpa)
