Canada’s prime minister has presented a compelling alternative to Trump’s chaos.

What do Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump have in common? The contempt for Europe. In their eyes, the old continent is not only woke as far as society is concerned, it has also lost touch economically and has become militarily insignificant.

Trump’s speech was therefore nothing but blasphemy about Europe, peppered with a few swipes at Switzerland. His trade minister, Howard Lutnick, had previously insulted the EU so insubordinately at a dinner that Christine Lagarde, the president of the European Central Bank, demonstratively left the room.

Nobody wants to claim that Europe is in top shape, and the evil saying that you can rely on the EU to always mess up in the end unfortunately has a lot of truth to it. With their behavior in the vote on Mercosur, the free trade agreement with Latin America, the German Green MPs in the European Parliament have once again demonstrated this impressively.
