Amsterdam bans advertising for meat and fossil energy. From this summer onwards, advertising for things like hamburgers, cruises, diesel cars or air travel will no longer be permitted on streets, squares and bus stops.
A majority of the local council approved the ban. According to the city, Amsterdam is the first capital in the world to ban meat advertising.
The Green Party GroenLinks, one of the initiators of the ban, spoke of an “important victory for the climate and public health”. “There is no longer any room in Amsterdam for advertising by large companies that are driving forward the climate crisis,” said Green city MP Jenneke van Pijpen.
Bans in other cities too
Amsterdam wanted to ban so-called fossil advertising as early as 2020. But so far it hasn’t happened. Advertising bans for services or products that use fossil energy and harm the climate already exist in other Dutch cities. Advertising for meat has not yet been banned. Last year, a court in The Hague also dismissed a lawsuit brought by tour operators against the advertising ban. (sda/dpa)
