According to police in South Africa, at least twelve children died in a traffic accident on their school bus. Five other girls and boys were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The bus driver lost control of the vehicle during an overtaking maneuver in the town of Vanderbijlpark, about 70 kilometers south of the economic metropolis of Johannesburg, and collided with a truck, the police said. There were primary school students and secondary school students on the bus.
In South Africa and many other African countries, serious accidents often occur due to speeding, unmaintained vehicles and poor road infrastructure. According to statistics from the Ministry of Transport, 11,418 people died in traffic accidents last year. (sda/dpa)
