The world slips into 2026 – fireworks in Sydney

Sydney defies terror: Two weeks after the bloody attack on Bondi Beach, the Australian metropolis rang in the New Year with a spectacular fireworks display against a fantastic backdrop. Before midnight, the words “Peace” and “Unity” as well as a menorah shone on the Harbor Bridge, bathed in white light, during a minute’s silence.

The seven-armed candlestick is a central religious symbol of Judaism. Thousands held candles and other lights in their hands.

On December 14, two assassins – a father and his son – shot at a crowd on the famous Bondi Beach during the Jewish festival of lights, Hanukkah. 15 people died. The traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations on the beach were canceled.

Cascades of light

An impressive nine tons of pyrotechnics and breathtaking special effects left onlookers in the harbor district and viewers around the world amazed in front of the screens for more than twelve minutes. Cascades of light flowed from the Harbor Bridge, and colorful flames and fireworks lit up the sky around the Sydney Opera House. More than a million people had already secured the best seats since morning.

The spectacle and other hotspots in the city were guarded by thousands of police officers. Some of the security forces were also supposed to carry long guns, which is unusual for the state’s police. (sda/dpa)
