Two people died in avalanches in two different winter sports resorts in the French Alps on Friday. A 60-year-old mountain guide was traveling with five skiers at an altitude of 2,600 meters in La Plagne in the Savoie region.
The group was hit by an avalanche, the prefecture said. The mountain guide later died in hospital from cardiac arrest. A 50-year-old woman in the group was treated for multiple injuries, and two other skiers were slightly injured.
Four cross-country skiers carried away
A few hours later, another avalanche occurred near the village of Valloire below Mont Jovet at an altitude of 2,300 meters. She took four cross-country skiers with her. One of them died and two others were slightly injured.
The avalanches occurred in areas considered low-risk. However, the weather conditions of the past few days have increased the danger, the authorities said. “Low risk does not mean that there is no risk,” warned the Gendarmerie of Savoie. (sda/afp)
