The long-time guitarist and keyboardist of the British rock wave band The Cure, Perry Bamonte, is dead. He died at home on Christmas after a short illness, the band announced on their official website. “Teddy” was a warm-hearted and essential part of the band’s history. He was 65 years old. Former band member and Cure co-founder Lol Tolhurst expressed his sadness over Bamonte’s death on Instagram.
The Cure (“Boys Don’t Cry”) was founded in 1978 and their debut album was released the following year. According to the group, from 1984 onwards Bamonte worked for the band in various functions for a few years. In 1990 he became a full member and played bass on several albums in addition to guitar and keyboard, including “Bloodflowers” (2000). He made more than 400 appearances over 14 years.
He left the band in 2005 – reportedly because frontman Robert Smith wanted to downsize the group. In October 2022 he was back on stage with The Cure after a break of 17 years – his first appearance with the band after this long time took place in Hamburg. Since returning to the group, he has played another 90 shows, the band said. Accordingly, his last concert was in November 2024. (sda/dpa)
