A British woman has died on a beach in Ibiza in a suspected drowning.
The pensioner has not been named and was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident on Tuesday, according to The Sun and local media.
The incident took place at the S’Arenal Gros beach in the village of Portinatx and is its largest beach.
Lifeguards attempted CPR, according to the Sant Joan City council as cited by Catalan paper Ara Balears.
A British doctor who was also holidaying in the area rushed to help the woman. A Spanish nurse and firefighter joined rescue efforts but were unable to revive her.
Police and paramedics also arrived at the scene and spent a further half an hour trying to resuscitate her. She was pronounced dead at 5:30pm with the Spanish Civil Guard taking over procedures at around 6pm.
An autopsy is expected to be conducted to ascertain the woman’s cause of death.
The Independent has contacted the Spanish Civil Guard for comment.
According to the Balearic Islands Statistics Institute (Ibestat), more than 315,000 British tourists flocked to Ibiza and Formentera between January and June this year.
Earlier this year, a 38-year-old man died after plunging 400ft from a popular tourist viewing spot in Spain, according to local reports.
The 38-year-old was found by a passer-by on the Paseo Nuevo coastal walkway in San Sebastian at around 11am on Friday, having fallen from the Mount Urgull area, Basque newspaper El Diario Vasco reported.
Emergency services were called but the unnamed man was said to have died at the scene. A ladder was reportedly deployed from a truck in order for authorities to access the body at the bottom of the viewing spot.
A number of Britons have also died in fatal falls in other parts of Spain in recent years. Two Scottish men, 26-year-old Evan Thomson and 19-year-old Gary Kelly, fell to their death from their balconies in separate and unrelated incidents at the same hotel, the Ibiza Rocks, in 2025.
A 64-year-old British man is reported to have died in July this year after he went down a water slide at an Ibiza hotel while on holiday but failed to resurface from the pool.
He was found getting into difficult in the pool and was given CPR by hotel staff but went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics arrived and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
