The Russian Embassy in Romania said Thursday that it received a notification from the Romanian State Prosecutor's Office about the detention of a Russian citizen.
The diplomatic service said the citizen, who is holding a residence permit in Romania, was arrested Tuesday for 30 days on suspicion of "attempting to commit sabotage" on the country's territory.
"According to reports that appeared in the Romanian media, citing the Romanian State Security Service and other law enforcement agencies, the Russian is accused of collecting military information through photography and video recording of sensitive facilities in order to organize acts of sabotage and subversion," it said.
The embassy emphasized that the published materials consist of "assumptions, speculation, and various kinds of fantasy."
"They contain no concrete data confirming the unlawful nature of our citizen's activities or the involvement of Russian state bodies in them. One gets the impression that our compatriot has become the victim of yet another provocation aimed at stirring up anti-Russian sentiment in Romanian society," it said.
The embassy said it is closely monitoring the development and is ready to provide the Russian citizen with the necessary consular and legal support.
"A request has been sent to the Romanian authorities for a meeting with him," it said.
The diplomatic service stressed that the incident "is yet another confirmation that today Russian citizens cannot feel safe, even when they are legally present on the territory of EU countries."
"At any moment, they risk becoming victims of unfounded persecution and provocations by Western intelligence services," it said.
