President Donald Trump on Monday announced the U.S. will impose a 50 percent tariff increase against Canada on vehicles, steel and other items after trade talks between the two countries collapsed.
Trump, posting on Truth Social, said the tariffs will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2027.
“Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS. Canada will be treated like a State no longer!,” he stated.
Trump rolled out a 50 percent tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods last month that had a 30 day grace period as negotiations continued.
Trump’s comments come after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to retaliate against the U.S.’s trade stance.
