The attacks, which started on Wednesday at 8 p.m. (US Eastern Time), were a “decisive response” to the attempted Iranian attacks on US forces in the Middle East, the US command responsible for the region, Centcom, announced on the X platform. No precise information was given about the targets of the attacks. Hours earlier, US President Donald Trump had already threatened retaliation.
For the first time since the US temporarily stopped attacks on targets in Iran over the weekend, the US military reported an Iranian attack with several ballistic missiles on US troops in the Middle East on Tuesday evening (US Eastern Time) – without naming specific targets. All missiles were intercepted, according to Centcom. Iranian radio broadcast a statement from the Revolutionary Guard that the attack had targeted a US military base in Jordan. Jordan’s armed forces said five missiles from Iran had been intercepted.
On Wednesday night, US forces said they had joined forces with their ally Saudi Arabia in attacking “terrorists” in Iraq who were close to Iran. The reason given was that this was a response to allegedly more than 30 drone attacks in the past 72 hours that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards had ordered. (sda/dpa)
Night explosions in Iran again
After the US military began new attacks against targets in Iran, local media reported explosions in the south of the country overnight. The Fars news agency, which is close to the Revolutionary Guards, reported attacks on the island of Gheshm in the Strait of Hormuz and in Bushehr province. The US military announced that it had begun new attacks, without specifying the targets.
