Two men who were said to have been fighters for the terrorist organization “Islamic State” (IS) a decade ago were arrested in Bavaria.

A 28-year-old Iraqi was caught in Traunreut in the Traunstein district on July 23, reported the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office. On Tuesday, a 46-year-old Syrian was reportedly arrested in Weiden in the Upper Palatinate. The two men are now in custody.
There is therefore no direct connection between the two cases. The investigators used an “IS member list” and other data to track down the men, who were in Bavaria in southern Germany, it was said. The Iraqi is said to have belonged to various IS units in Iraq and Syria between January and September 2016. The Syrian is said to have also worked in the terrorist group’s combat units and in the IS police in 2016.
Both suspects are said to have received monthly payments from the so-called “Islamic State” (IS). They are accused of membership in the terrorist organization. The Criminal Code makes it possible to prosecute support for terrorist organizations abroad in Germany. Suspects are presumed innocent until they are legally convicted. (sda/dpa)
