A Canadian citizen of Chinese origin has to remain in custody for the time being because of alleged espionage at NATO. The responsible court decided this, said the Belgian public prosecutor’s office.
According to the information, the accused completed an internship at the military headquarters of the Allied Forces in Europe (Shape) in Mons, Belgium. She was arrested last week: The woman is suspected of spying for the benefit of a third country and participating in a criminal organization. Her workplace and her home were searched. The suspect had previously come to the attention of Shape’s security services.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, the accused can now appeal against the decision. In principle, she will otherwise have to appear before the court once a month for the first three months, after which there will be a review every two months. The accused can appeal again against any decision of the responsible chamber under the conditions provided for by law. (sda/dpa)
