According to the police, the organizers are expecting 250,000 participants at the demonstration in Hamburg.
The number of emergency services for the big demonstration on Saturday will be increased again, a police spokesman said, without giving specific numbers. “Whether before, during or after the demo, we will be very present and responsive to the participants,” said the spokesman.
A 21-year-old German with Lebanese roots and connections to Islamist terror is said to have hit people with a van on the sidelines of the Berlin CSD on Saturday evening and attacked them with a stabbing weapon. One woman was killed and another 29 people were injured, some critically. Abdul B. was shot by emergency services when he was arrested on Sunday evening.
The Hamburg police spokesman emphasized: “The police are firmly on the side of the queer community and are doing their part to ensure that the CSD and all Pride Week events can take place safely.”
No specific hazard warnings
Germany is in an abstractly high risk situation and the security authorities are correspondingly vigilant. However, there are no specific indications of danger for the events surrounding the Hamburg CSD. The police are relying on their proven operational concept. Route protection and technical barriers to protect against overruns are important elements. (hkl/sda/dpa)
