According to Canadian authorities, many Canadians have been avoiding travel to the neighboring United States since US President Donald Trump took office for the second time.

The United States has long been Canada’s most important international travel destination, “but after the change of government in the USA in early 2025 and the introduction of the “America First” policy, Canadians’ travel plans changed abruptly,” said Canada’s statistics agency. In 2025, 7.1 million fewer people traveled to the USA than in 2024. That is a decrease of 23.5 percent.
At the same time, travel within the country and to other countries increased to a comparable extent. Data from this year suggested that trend is continuing. According to the authority, travel spending on visits to the USA fell by 3.3 billion to a total of 18.8 billion Canadian dollars (currently almost 12 billion euros) in 2025.
The US Department of Commerce reports that around 20.2 million international visitors from Canada traveled to the US in 2024. In 2025 there would be 16 million. The numbers are only comparable to a limited extent because both authorities use different statistical concepts. With regard to German tourists, the number fell from around 2 million in 2024 to around 1.8 million.
