If bans and rules are not respected, monitoring is necessary. A ranger will be deployed for the first time in a Dolomite town this summer.

Lake Carezza is one of the most famous natural attractions in the Dolomites. The peaks of Rosengarten and Latemar are reflected in its emerald green water – a photo opportunity that attracts visitors from all over the world. But the onslaught has consequences. Tourists repeatedly climb over barriers, fly drones or ignore other protective regulations. South Tyrol responded for the first time with a ranger, as the news portal of the autonomous province of Bolzano reports.
Since mid-May, the experienced hiking guide and ski instructor Giorgio Poschiavin has been working around the lake every day. He supports the foresters of the Latemar Forest and is intended to inform visitors about the special features of the protected area until the end of the season and to intervene if necessary.
“In recent years, it has happened more and more often that people often climb over the lake fence early in the morning or in the evening to take pictures in order to distribute these photos or videos on social media,” said Andreas Agreiter, deputy director of the State Domain agency, to the portal. Drones have already crashed and fallen into the lake or got stuck in the treetops around the body of water. Poschiavin has spoken to more than 100 drone pilots in the past eight weeks and pointed out the ban on drone flights, reports Agreiter.
The responsible forestry and tourism councilor Luis Walcher also sees the new ranger as a stroke of luck. “With him we have a contact person who informs visitors, sensitizes them and ensures that this special natural area is preserved in the future.” Precisely because tourism continues to increase, “we have to take concrete measures like this,” said Walcher.
How many visitors come to Lake Carezza every year? The responsible municipality of Welschnofen, which manages the parking lot at the lake, counted a total of 196,600 vehicle entries in 2025. South Tyrol as a whole recorded 9.1 million arrivals and 38.2 million overnight stays last year.
