The right-wing politician Flávio Bolsonaro has been chosen by his party as its presidential candidate in Brazil. The eldest son of ex-head of state Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for an attempted coup, will run in the October elections against the left-wing incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who will officially be re-elected as a candidate in August.
At the Partido Liberal (PL) party conference in the metropolis of São Paulo, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (45) received the support of the ultra-liberal Argentine President Javier Milei. As one of the most prominent representatives of the political right in Latin America, Milei traveled to Brazil specifically to be present at the nomination. The Bolsonaro family also maintains close political ties to US President Donald Trump.
The Left Workers’ Party wants to officially nominate Lula soon
According to the latest survey by the Datafolha research institute, the left-wing head of state Lula (80) is currently ahead in favor of voters. Lula has been president again since 2023. He previously held the position between 2003 and 2011. He belongs to the workers’ party PT.
The presidential election in Latin America’s largest economy will take place on October 4th. If no candidate achieves an absolute majority, there will be a runoff election on October 25th. (sda/dpa)
