The conurbation around Slovyansk and Kramatorsk is the last large fortress belt that Ukrainian troops in the Donetsk region hold under their control. Russia, which has been waging war in Ukraine for more than four years, is demanding the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk region in order to begin peace negotiations. (sda/dpa)
