Products that are not sufficiently available in the USA or have a particularly sensitive supply chain are excluded.
These include oil and gas, beef, orange juice and certain aircraft parts, according to a US government official. The tariffs are due from Wednesday next week.
This was preceded by an investigation that revealed a large number of unfair trading practices. This includes trade benefits for India and Mexico that do not benefit the USA, the government official complains. The USA also criticizes alleged obstacles for its tech companies and financial service providers, which have to contend with unfair restrictions in Brazil. If the Brazilian government eliminates the unfair practices, the tariffs will be rolled back, the government official said.
USA warns of retaliation
Since the US Supreme Court lifted a large number of tariffs ordered by President Donald Trump in February, the government has increasingly relied on a passage of a trade law from 1974 – including in the case of Brazil. This law allows the imposition of tariffs if unfair trade practices are detected.
Corresponding investigations are also underway against some European countries. The accusation: Medicines are being illegally discounted while US citizens bear the majority of the development costs.
The government official warned the Brazilian government to take countermeasures. “If we were to see retaliation, we would frankly be forced to adapt our approach.” (sda/dpa)
