An Iraqi couple has been convicted in Germany of enslaving Yazidi girls and membership in the terrorist group Islamic State (IS).
The Munich Higher Regional Court (OLG) imposed a life sentence on the man and a youth sentence of nine and a half years on the woman – for, among other things, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The German court found it proven that the two bought two Yazidi girls in Iraq as slaves and exploited them, and that the man, who worked as a hairdresser in the Bavarian capital before he is said to have become radicalized in a Munich mosque, sexually abused the children.
Prosecutor spoke of “monstrous violence”
“The monstrous violence is so far removed from humanity that it appears unreal,” said the representative of the Federal Prosecutor General. Everything served IS’s goal of destroying the Yazidi faith.
The now 30-year-old wife apologized during the trial and said in her last word: “I’m sorry.” Her husband did not want to speak in court. (sda/dpa)
