A man held a supermarket employee in Berlin under his control for around twelve hours. Now it is clear who he is – and the justice system must decide what happens next.

The police have clarified the identity of the alleged perpetrator of a hostage-taking in a Berlin supermarket. According to a spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office, the man is a 29-year-old Turkish national. He is said to have taken control of an employee of the supermarket in the south of Berlin with a knife.

The hostage-taking began on Friday evening. On Saturday morning, the police responded and used a Taser against the man. Both the woman and the 29-year-old remained largely uninjured. The alleged perpetrator is in police custody. The public prosecutor’s office wants to decide on Sunday whether he will be brought before a judge.
