As Chinese state media reported, over 500,000 residents in the eastern province of Zhejiang alone have temporarily left their homes. In Taiwan, more than 14,000 residents from mountainous regions at risk of landslides were brought to safety as a precaution. In addition, more than 1,100 domestic and international flights in Taiwan were canceled and ferry services were suspended on Saturday.
Even though extensions of the storm already hit the north and east of Taiwan on Saturday, the authorities have not yet reported any major damage. However, around 68,920 households were temporarily without power on Friday after heavy rain and strong winds damaged the power grid.
The Philippines, where the typhoon was also felt, has reported at least 17 deaths so far. Another 9 people are still missing.
The Chinese Meteorological Service expects the typhoon to make landfall in the eastern province of Zhejiang early Sunday morning (local time). At times, “Bavi” was classified as a so-called super typhoon, but recently it had weakened somewhat. (sda/dpa)
