Around two and a half weeks after the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, the official death toll has exceeded the four thousand mark. 4,118 people died in the disaster, said the President of the National Assembly and brother of the acting head of government, Jorge Rodríguez, on the X platform. There are also 16,740 injured. Almost 18,000 people lost their homes in the disaster.
Two powerful earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on June 24th. More than a thousand significantly weaker aftershocks followed. Numerous buildings, especially in La Guaira, are in ruins.
According to experts, it is extremely unlikely that any survivors will be recovered. Relief workers are now concentrating on clearing the rubble and caring for those affected. (sda/dpa)
