The fire broke out in the afternoon in the municipality of Los Gallardos in the province of Almería, around 300 kilometers northeast of Málaga, as the regional government announced. Regional Health Minister Antonio Sanz spoke of an “unprecedented tragedy” – the forest fire “with the most serious consequences to date” in Andalusia. «The pain is immeasurable. Andalusia is in mourning and our hearts are with Almería and all those affected.”
Towns evacuated
According to the minister, around 150 firefighters with five fire engines and other rescue workers are currently on duty in Los Gallardos. The residents of several towns were brought to safety as a precaution.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also expressed his “great sadness and dismay at the terrible consequences of the fire” on Platform X.
A whole series of forest fires are currently raging in Spain. Since the beginning of the year, large-scale fires have already destroyed more than 50,000 hectares of land there, as data from the European Commission’s Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) shows. (dab/sda/dpa)
