After the deaths of several Mexicans during operations by the US migration agency ICE, Mexico wants to take legal action against those responsible in the USA. As Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco announced, three Mexican migrants have died in deportation raids and 14 others in migration detention centers.
Velasco spoke of a “painful tragedy” to which, on the instructions of President Claudia Sheinbaum, the response would no longer only be diplomatic, but also legal, before the public prosecutor’s offices of the affected states and the US Department of Justice. In addition to filing criminal charges, Mexico plans to civilly sue the private companies that operate ICE’s detention centers.
Velasco: Recent incident needs to be thoroughly investigated
Most recently, the Mexican Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was shot dead on July 7th during an immigration operation in Houston. “This incident must be investigated with the utmost seriousness,” demanded Velasco.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Salgado had resisted the officers’ instructions, rammed an emergency vehicle with his car and then tried to hit an officer with his vehicle. An ICE officer then fired. Family, civil rights organizations and Democratic politicians are calling for an independent investigation into the operation. (sda/dpa)
