The first pieces of debris from the crashed Pakistani cargo plane of the cargo airline K2 Airways have been found in the Arabian Sea. However, there is no trace of the crew: The search for the five crew members is still ongoing, according to a statement from the Pakistani airport authority to X late on Wednesday evening.
Navy units identified the aircraft parts after a twelve-hour search and found them off the Pakistani coastal town of Ormara, it was said. The German Press Agency learned from the Pakistani aviation authority that the sea, which had been whipped up by the monsoon, had made the search more difficult since the rescue operation began.
“Praying for our colleagues”
The airline K2 Airways published a statement on Facebook in which it identified the five crew members by name in accordance with national customs and stated that they were cooperating with the authorities: “We continue to pray fervently for the safety of our colleagues.”
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed shock at the tragic incident and expressed his condolences to the families of the crew members in a statement.
Navigation problems reported, then disappeared
On Tuesday evening, the plane initially disappeared from air traffic control radar. Shortly beforehand, the crew had spoken of navigation problems, the Pakistani airport authority wrote in a statement – the plane had lost a lot of altitude. The Boeing 737 was traveling from the coastal emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to the Pakistani port metropolis of Karachi.
