Six months after the bloody crackdown on protests in Iran, Amnesty International has called for global pressure on the government in Tehran. “The international community has failed to investigate the crimes against the Iranian population and to credibly advocate for international criminal prosecution,” said Julia Duchrow, Secretary General of the human rights organization in Germany.
In a statement, Amnesty International called on the international community to put “the systemic impunity and human rights crisis” in Iran on the agenda. The human rights organization also called on Germany to investigate based on the principle of universal justice and to bring those responsible for crimes before German courts under international law.
The latest wave of protests in Iran was initially triggered by an economic crisis at the end of December. However, the demonstrations quickly developed into political uprisings against the authoritarian system of rule of the Islamic Republic. The security apparatus cracked down on the protests brutally. Thousands of demonstrators have been killed and more than a dozen people have been executed in connection with the protests. (nil/sda/dpa)
