After the first case of Ebola introduced into Europe since the start of the current outbreak, the French Ministry of Health has given the all-clear. The doctor, who provided humanitarian aid and entered France from the Democratic Republic of Congo on June 23, was discharged from the hospital as recovered, said a statement from Health Minister Stéphanie Rist, which she sent to the AFP news agency.
The doctor, who only showed mild symptoms, received medical care in a Paris hospital and was closely monitored. After two negative tests, the patient was now able to return home safely, the minister said.
The Ebola virus continues to spread in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the latest authorities, at least 399 people have died in the outbreak since April. 1,333 cases were confirmed in the laboratory. The World Health Organization assumes that the number of unreported cases is high because the outbreak went undetected for weeks. 20 cases have been detected in neighboring Uganda.
Ebola fever is a life-threatening disease. The virus is transmitted through physical contact and contact with body fluids. The current outbreak is particularly difficult to contain, also because there is currently neither a vaccine nor a special therapy for the Ebola pathogen of the Bundibugyo type. (sda/dpa)
