Just a few days after the last heat wave, Spain is heading for temperatures of more than 40 degrees again. From Sunday at the latest it will be really hot in the southwest of the country, but also in the north and northeast, warned the national weather service Aemet.
The heat wave in Spain at the end of June then spread across France and into Germany with record temperatures. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe, Hans Kluge, heat waves are no longer “one-off extreme events” but rather recurring crises. “They occur more frequently, become more intense and last longer,” he said, according to a statement on Tuesday.
In Spain, the air continues to heat up, particularly in river valleys in Andalusia and Extremadura in the southwest, as well as along the Ebro River in the Aragon region in the northeast of the country. Maximum temperatures of 41 to 42 degrees were expected here for Sunday. But even in the otherwise rather cool Galicia in the far north-west of Spain, temperatures could climb up to 37 degrees. Temperatures of around 35 degrees are expected on the holiday island of Mallorca.
Aemet declared the second-highest weather warning level, orange, for the affected parts of the country, where an estimated ten million people live – which corresponds to a “significant health risk”. (sda/dpa)
