During the heat wave in northern France, two 15-month-old twins died from lack of water at home, according to initial investigations. The two girls were discovered dead in their beds in Beuvrages near Valenciennes at midday, reported the broadcaster RTL and other French media, citing the police.
Four siblings between the ages of three and six were also taken to a hospital because they were dehydrated, one of them by rescue helicopter. The parents were taken into police custody.
According to the reports, the parents themselves alerted the emergency services. The twins are said to have already been in a state of rigor mortis. The background is still completely unclear. Neighbors told broadcaster RTL that the family had only moved into the town two months ago and had been inconspicuous. The parents were said to not have been known to the social authorities, the France 3 broadcaster reported.
As for large parts of the country, the highest heat warning level red has been in effect for northern France in the past few days. However, temperatures have fallen again since the weekend. (sda/dpa)
