A high-ranking US government official told the German Press Agency: “Nothing has been canceled.” Technical discussions on the implementation of the framework agreement are therefore scheduled for the coming days. In addition, the channels for conflict avoidance are set up and functioning. A location for possible talks was not mentioned.
In recent days there have been attacks by the United States on targets in Iran following attacks in the Strait of Hormuz that Washington attributed to Tehran. This threatened to escalate the conflict again just two weeks after a framework agreement was signed.
On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio promised a continuation of the US-Iran talks at a technical level and mentioned Monday or Tuesday as a time period. He also assumed that negotiations would take place again in Switzerland. Last Sunday, high-ranking representatives of the USA, Iran and the mediating states Pakistan and Qatar met for talks in a luxury resort near Lucerne. It was agreed on working groups on, among other things, sanctions issues and the Iranian nuclear program as well as contact groups on the Strait of Hormuz and the ceasefire in Lebanon.
The negotiations build on the framework agreement agreed between the USA and Iran. The aim of further talks is to find a possible way out of the war that the USA and Israel started against Iran on February 28th. (sda/dpa)
