The influential Iranian clergy are calling for negotiations with the USA to be broken off after the recent American attacks. In a statement from the theological centers in the pilgrim city of Qom, the president, the members of the Security Council and the negotiating team were called on to end talks with the USA “immediately” if there was another breach of the contract. This must be done for both legal and religious reasons, as a breach of contract represents a disregard for the provisions set out in the framework agreement, said the statement, which was read out on state broadcaster Irib.
The theological centers in Qom are led by influential clerics. Since the 1979 revolution led by Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, they have been considered the initiators of the country’s Islamic ideology and have therefore had great influence in the political system.
Revolutionary Guards also oppose further talks
Media close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard also consider further negotiations with the USA to be no longer viable. According to them, the attacks have already violated the first and central point of the framework agreement – the end of hostilities on all fronts. The tenor was that further discussions would be pointless under these circumstances.
Despite the ceasefire, mutual attacks have occurred again in the Iran war in recent days. The United States launched attacks on Iran after Tehran attacked a ship in the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast on Thursday and Saturday, according to US information. Iran had previously warned that passage through the strait was only safe on the route set by Tehran.
