After the earthquakes in Venezuela, opposition leader María Corina Machado wants to return to the South American country. The Nobel Peace Prize-winning politician confirmed this to the US broadcaster Fox News. “Absolutely, the time has come,” she replied when asked if she planned to return.
“I will be back in Venezuela very soon,” Machado said in the interview. After the devastating earthquake with more than 1,400 deaths, she wanted to be with the Venezuelan people, mourn with them and give each other strength. For months, Machado has repeatedly announced an imminent return to her home country. However, according to a report in the New York Times, the US government considers such a timely step to be inappropriate.
Last December, the politician, who had previously been living underground, secretly left Venezuela to personally accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. Shortly afterwards, while she was already abroad, Washington carried out a military operation in Venezuela in which ruler Nicolás Maduro was captured. Washington is now working closely with Acting President Delcy Rodríguez. Rodríguez was vice president in Maduro’s government. (sda/dpa)
