A baby was rescued Friday from the rubble of a house in Venezuela that collapsed in Wednesday’s devastating earthquake. Video footage from the particularly affected coastal town shows rescuers freeing the newborn from a mountain of rubble, to the applause of many bystanders.
The rescue workers formed a human chain, wrapped the child in a blanket and handed him down. They cleaned it briefly, then the father, who was watching what was happening, was able to hold his child against his naked torso.
As the British BBC reports, the mother is said to have been saved alive. The Straits Times from Singapore reports that a hospital employee suspects that the mother probably protected her child in the rubble.
An 18-day-old baby was rescued in La Guaira, Venezuela after she was trapped underneath rubble from the earthquakes. Rescue teams then saved her mother around 90 minutes later.

The video was recorded by a family acquaintance, Andreina Quintero, reports the BBC. According to them, the child is only 18 days old and was under the rubble for around 32 hours.
The extent of the earthquake catastrophe in Venezuela is becoming increasingly clear. The preliminary death toll has already risen to 1,430 and more than 3,200 people were injured, as the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, announced. Thousands of people are still believed to be under the rubble. Some are found still alive.
After a six-hour operation, a Colombian team managed to rescue an eleven-year-old in the state of La Guaira, as a video from the Colombian disaster agency UNGRD shows. Teams from El Salvador and Spain also celebrated successful rescues.
