Iran once again claims control of shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which is important for world trade, solely for itself. “The Strait of Hormuz will be placed fully under the administration of Iran again within the next 30 days,” said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at a press conference in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Responsibility for the strait lies solely with Iran, Araghchi affirmed. “Any interference or attempt to create parallel structures would further complicate the situation, create additional tensions and delay the reopening of this strategically central waterway,” said Araghtschi.
Iran effectively brought shipping traffic to a standstill in the Strait of Hormuz with threats and attacks after the US and Israel began attacks on the country and used the strait as leverage in the struggle for a negotiated solution to the war.
Opening the Strait of Hormuz to shipping is a central part of the recently agreed framework agreement between the USA and Iran. It stipulates that Iran cannot charge fees for the passage of ships during the 60-day negotiations.
Iran should negotiate what happens next with Oman – taking into account international law and involving the neighboring states. International law experts consider fees to be problematic. (hkl/sda/dpa)
