The area around the southern Italian city of Naples has been shaken by an earthquake. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) located the earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 at 4:17 a.m. in the Phlegraean Fields, a so-called supervolcano. The local authorities reported slight earthquakes there almost 24 hours earlier.
According to media reports, the tremor was also clearly felt in Naples, particularly on higher floors and in the districts of the city that immediately border the Phlegraean Fields area to the west. There were initially no reports of injuries or major damage.
The Phlegraean Fields – an area with high volcanic activity – have been hit by numerous small and sometimes larger earthquakes for some time. They are Europe’s largest active supervolcano. Supervolcanoes are characterized by a particularly large magma chamber and enormous violence: Unlike normal volcanoes, supervolcanoes literally explode.
Around three million people live in Naples and the surrounding area. The large city lies at the foot of the volcano Vesuvius, which has no connection with the Phlegraean Fields. (hkl/sda/dpa)
