The heat wave in France is getting worse again today. The weather service Météo France has the highest warning level, red, for 72 departments and thus most of the country as of midday.
Highest temperatures of between 34 and 39 degrees are expected across the board and temperatures of up to 41 degrees in some regions. The night was already extremely stressful for the people in France. In many cases the temperatures only fell to 23 to 26 degrees.
After the hottest day in France since 1947 was reported on Tuesday, the new record was broken again on Wednesday, albeit with only a slightly higher temperature. According to preliminary values, the average temperature for mainland France climbed to 30 degrees, said Météo France.
According to preliminary data from the weather service, temperatures rose to 41.5 degrees in Vannes in Brittany, 40.7 degrees in Biarritz on the Atlantic coast and 39.6 degrees in Paris on Wednesday afternoon. Public life is suffering massively from the high temperatures, trains have been canceled and exams and sports competitions have been postponed. Water is temporarily sold out in supermarkets and there are power outages.
Local storms and rain are expected from Thursday. Temperatures are expected to drop from Friday. (sda/dpa)
