Two thirds of them had already been frozen in advance based on the Venezuela regulation as part of criminal proceedings in Switzerland, as the spokesman for the Federal Office for Foreign Affairs (EDA) announced on Monday upon request.
Now the remaining 239 million francs have also been frozen. The online medium “Tippinpoint” first reported about it.
This means that the entire amount that was reported to the Money Laundering Reporting Office (MROS) is blocked. The Venezuelan assets of 687 million francs come from the entourage of President Nicolás Maduro, who was arrested by the USA.

The assets reported to the Anti-Money Laundering Unit concern 21 of the 37 individuals listed in the Venezuela Regulation. At the beginning of January, the Federal Council announced that no members of the incumbent government would be affected by the precautionary lockdown.

The legal basis for the precautionary blocking of funds is the Act on the Blocking and Restitution of Illegally Acquired Assets of Foreign Politically Exposed Persons (SRVG). The FDFA announced at the beginning of the year that if it turns out that funds were acquired unlawfully, Switzerland would like to make them available to the people of Venezuela.
