Yesterday evening we published a story here on watson in which the supposed opinion of the US political scientist John Mearsheimer on the significance of the Epstein case in the USA was discussed.
Unfortunately, we fell victim to a deepfake – the statements did not come from Mearsheimer himself, but were put into his mouth.
We apologize for this oversight – we immediately retracted the story after we discovered it.
The incident impressively demonstrates the capabilities that technical tools offer when manipulating image and sound material. He has shown us that we need to be more vigilant and deal with this more intensively than ever before.
